The name literally means 'the cemetery of the water springs' because Via Fontanelle, where the cemetery is located, is an old water course. The ancient quarry is located outside the city walls and was intended for quarrying tuff which was used as construction material. When the city was struck by epidemics, earthquakes and eruptions of the Vesuvius in the 16th century the quarry became a burial site born of necessity. In 1656, when a plague struck the city, it is said that 250.000 corpses where piled up there. In the end of the 18th century people wanted to be buried in churches because they believed that those not buried in the soils of the church are unable to enter heaven. The name literally means 'the cemetery of the water springs' because Via Fontanelle, where the cemetery is located, is an old water course. The ancient quarry is located outside the city walls and was intended for quarrying tuff which was used as construction material. When the city was struck by epidemics, earthquakes and eruptions of the Vesuvius in the 16th century the quarry became a burial site born of necessity. In 1656, when a plague struck the city, it is said that 250.000 corpses where piled up there. In the end of the 18th century people wanted to be buried in churches because they believed that those not buried in the soils of the church are unable to enter heaven. Since then, there has been a very strong devotion for these unidentified remains. Skulls were put in wooden boxes or into special glass because the devotees “(…) identified in them the souls of the purgatory that needed special care and attention“. In exchange for this care the skulls are asked to fulfill wishes and to predict the future. Since its excavation the quarry has converted into a cultural space. Though it is said that mainly people from lower classes were put there, without being named or labelled, all skeletons look similar and are given new meanings through local community members. Our flat is directly opposite to Klinik Landstraße, one of Vienna’s major hospitals, with windows facing to the hospital garden. Once a place with plenty of patients, visitors and hospital staff chatting, sunbathing or relaxing now became a sight with Hitchcock-esque qualities. The mood in the garden had drastically changed. Only a few people were outside, most of them alone, obviously searching for some moments of privacy in times of tension, uncertainty and fear. It felt like the inherent social implications that played out alongside the pandemic were visible in a metaphoric way in front of our very eyes. After two days of observing, we started to take pictures of the scenery, carefully following the few people staying outside. The antifungal drugs administered had no effect and several patients died. It was feared that the trigger was a resistant strain of a mold called Aspergillus fumigatus. But where did this resistance come from? Tissue samples from aspergillosis cases archived at this hospital in previous years were analyzed. Since the new samples did not match them, it turned out that the resistance probably had an environmental source. Excessive use of azoles in the production of tulip bulbs (the same antifungal agent used in patients) resulted in a resistant strain of Aspergillus fumigatus, which entered patients' lungs via the spores of the tulips from the hospital garden. In October 2022, the WHO published a list of 18 fungal pathogens, which also includes Aspergillus fumigatus. The processes of resistance development result largely from the overuse of resources - such as, in this case, the overuse of azole against plant pathogens. Human health is closely linked to the health of animals and the environment, and the way how we condition nature. A smear was taken from each onion by our project partner – Dr. Martin Kirchmair - at the University of Innsbruck. The spores obtained from the smear were further cultivated under laboratory conditions on transparent agar culture media in Petri dishes with a diameter of 20 cm. After around 7 to 10 days of growth, the petri dish containing the pure culture of the Aspergilli from a tulip bulb was then placed on a picture from a tulip catalog showing the flowering plant of that bulb variety. The resulting photos illustrate both the blooming tulip and the 'stowaways' called Aspergillus fumigatus that were brought along on its bulb.
